The Challenge

Lunar Quilts showed that when an artist, a cultural institution and a space agency work as one, young people produce work that belongs on a museum wall. The question was whether that could be built deliberately, at scale, and internationally — rather than happening once.

It also presented a harder problem. An initiative spanning textile art, spaceflight, ocean science, youth education and international cultural programming is difficult to explain. Partners understood pieces of it. Almost nobody understood the whole, which made it nearly impossible to fund.

 

What We Did

Marsha Lewis co-founded INTERWOVEN: The Threads That Connect Us with curators Alicia Adams and Gilda Almeida - between them decades of international festival and exhibition programming at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts - with Dr. Karen Nyberg as Founding Artist.

Hipsetter led brand development, positioning, and the digital platform, with a specific brief: something that would hold up in front of museum directors, funders and corporate partners, and make the whole model legible in a single visit.

 

Execution

The initiative brings together an international advisory group of curators, designers, scholars and artists, alongside guest artists working in textiles, spacewear, ocean plastics and music.

Programs to date span the United States and the United Kingdom, with collaborations in development across the Middle East and South America. Upcoming work includes a student exhibition during Art Basel week in Miami in December 2026, developed with New World School of the Arts, where young artists create work alongside professionals and everything is exhibited together.

 

Impact

Within a week of the platform launching, partners, funders and press could see the whole picture for the first time — and the conversations changed accordingly.

INTERWOVEN now operates as an independent international initiative with an established advisory board, a roster of participating artists, and a program pipeline extending into 2028.
